Methodology
How Open BJJ is made
Every fact on the site comes from a source you can check. This page lists those sources, how pages are drafted and checked, and what the dates mean.
What is on the site
Open BJJ has 205 techniques, 74 guides and rule explainers, 39 fighter profiles, 106 gyms, 77 events, 49 camps, 50 creators. None of it is the author’s own expertise: Kornel Dubieniecki is a software engineer and an amateur who trains occasionally. The knowledge is compiled from the sources below.
Sources
Rules and legality come from the organisers’ own documents, listed with the edition used, not from blogs or summaries:
- IBJJF Rules Book (Technical Fouls – Illegal Moves table), IBJJF (Version 6.1).
- ADCC Rules and Regulations, ADCC (ADCC_Rules_2026_10-19).
- ADCC Opens Legal Techniques by Division, ADCC (Updated 7/20/2026).
- Grappling Industries Rulebook (Legal Techniques chart), Grappling Industries (G.I Rulebook - 2026/02/09).
- NAGA Rules (No Gi and Gi legal / illegal techniques), NAGA (Copyright 2023 edition (PDF modified 2024-07-11)).
The rule documents behind the legality matrix were retrieved on October 22, 2026.
- Events and camps: organiser calendars and listings (IBJJF, Smoothcomp, Gioza, BJJ Globetrotters and the hosts’ own pages). Each listing links its source; confirm dates and registration there.
- Fighters: Wikipedia, BJJ Heroes and grappling news sites, linked on each profile. Photos are freely licensed Wikimedia Commons images with their credit and licence.
- Gyms: the gym’s own website and public profiles. Schedules and prices are never invented.
- Creators: their public profiles. Follower numbers are approximate snapshots with the date they were read, not live counts.
Drafting and checking
- Pages are drafted with AI help from the sources above, then fact-checked against those sources before they are published.
- IBJJF legality on technique pages, the illegal moves chart and the matrix comes from one table transcribed from the IBJJF rulebook, so they cannot disagree.
- Wording is written for this site. Instruction is never copied from other sites or instructionals.
- There is no expert reviewer. Treat technique pages as study notes, and learn from a qualified coach on the mat.
- Gym and creator rankings are editorial. Nobody pays to be listed or ranked.
Dates and updates
- “Published” is the date a page first went up. “Updated” appears only after a material change to its content, such as a rules change or a corrected fact. Typo fixes do not move it.
- The same dates feed the sitemap and the structured data. Pages without a real change date, such as event, gym and fighter listings, carry none rather than the date of the last build.
- Rule sources show the edition and the date they were read.
Corrections
Found a mistake, a rules change or an outdated gym or event? Email contact@open-bjj.com with the page and, if you can, the source. Confirmed corrections are fixed and the page’s “Updated” date moves.
