FAQ

IBJJF places adults by birth year. Adult is 18 and over, Master 1 is 30 and over, Master 2 is 36 and over, and each master division after that adds five years, up to Master 7 at 61 and over. Age is the competition year minus the birth year.

How IBJJF counts age

Birth year decides the division for the whole season. The birthday does not.

IBJJF subtracts the birth year from the competition year. The month and day you were born do not matter.

Example: someone born in December 1996 is still 29 for most of 2026. IBJJF counts them as 30, so they are Master 1 at every 2026 event, including events in January.

Every division opens on 1 January. Someone born in 1990 moves from Master 1 to Master 2 at the first event of 2026, whatever their birthday.

Choosing Adult or Masters

Masters can stay in their own division or register in Adult. Each choice has trade-offs.

  • IBJJF lets masters register in Adult. Your master division is the oldest one you qualify for, but you are not forced into it.
  • Adult brackets are often bigger, with younger opponents. Some athletes over 30 pick Adult for a harder field or more matches.
  • Master brackets put you against people closer to your age. Older divisions can be small, so check the registration list before the deadline.

What rules masters follow

Masters share the adult illegal-moves columns for their belt, with one exception: brown and black belt no-gi.

  • White, blue and purple masters use the same Illegal Moves columns as adults of the same belt.
  • Brown and black masters use the brown and black column in the gi and in no-gi. Heel hooks are legal only for adult brown and black belt in no-gi; illegal for masters, the gi, and every age and belt below adult brown belt. Knee reaping and knee-twisting locks follow the same split, so a master who wants them has to register in Adult.
  • Weigh-in at US events is in pounds. You get one attempt, right before your first fight. At gi events you weigh in wearing the gi.
  • Weight limits and match times can vary by division and event. Read the event page instead of relying on a general chart.

Key Takeaways

  • IBJJF Adult is 18+, Master 1 is 30+, Master 2 is 36+, and each later master division adds five years up to Master 7 at 61+.
  • Age is the competition year minus the birth year. Someone born in December 1996 is Master 1 for all of 2026.
  • 2027 birth years shift by one year. They are computed from the same thresholds and not yet published by IBJJF.
  • Masters can register in Adult. For brown and black belts, heel hooks and knee reaping are legal in Adult no-gi and illegal in Masters.
  • Weigh-in is one attempt, right before the first fight, in the gi at gi events.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is Master 1 in IBJJF?
Master 1 is age 30 and over, counted as the competition year minus the birth year. For 2026 events that means athletes born in 1996 or earlier. For 2027 it is born 1997 or earlier.
What age is IBJJF Master 2?
Master 2 is age 36 and over. For 2026 events that means born in 1990 or earlier, and for 2027 born in 1991 or earlier.
What is Juvenile in IBJJF?
Juvenile is the division for ages 16 and 17. For 2026 events it covers athletes born in 2010 and 2009, and it allows white, blue and purple belts.
Can a master compete in the Adult division?
Yes. IBJJF lets masters register in Adult instead of their master division. Many athletes over 30 do this when the adult bracket is bigger or they want a harder field.
How does IBJJF calculate age?
IBJJF uses birth year, not the birthday. Age is the competition year minus the birth year, so someone born in December 1996 counts as 30 and is Master 1 at every 2026 event.
What age is Master 7 in IBJJF?
Master 7 is age 61 and over. For 2026 events that means born in 1965 or earlier. The 2026 Sacramento Fall Open lists blue through black belts for Master 7.
