Mayssa Bastos is a lighter-weight reference point for modern guard play. After early success with GFTeam and Unity, she moved to Art of Jiu-Jitsu in 2023 and continued stacking IBJJF Worlds titles at roosterweight while also winning major no-gi events.

In 2024 she captured the ONE Women’s Atomweight Submission Grappling World Championship against Danielle Kelly and later defended it. Her De La Riva, berimbolo, and back-take chains map directly onto Open BJJ’s open-guard and back-control technique pages.
