Gracie Barra West Downtown is at 521 Adelaide Street West (M5V 0N8), in the King West area of downtown Toronto. It opened in 2018 and Gracie Barra has named it a Premium School at least three years in a row.

The school was founded by Professor Alexandre "Carioca", a fourth-degree black belt from Petrópolis, Brazil. He earned his black belt in 2008 and holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in physical education. He started Gracie Barra's Toronto project in 2016 and opened this school two years later. Black belt José Martins, who has trained since 2004, teaches the adult fundamentals (GB1), expert (GB3) and competition classes. Brown belts Ciro Diaz and Mohammed Kobrosli, both students of Professor Alexandre, also teach.

The timetable is broad:

  • Adults: GB1 fundamentals, GB2 advanced and GB3 expert classes.
  • No-gi: dedicated no-gi classes.
  • Competition: a competition class.
  • Women's program: classes for women.
  • Kids: split by age into Tiny Champions, Little Champions 1 and 2, and Junior.
  • Other: private lessons, plus Superioga and Ginástica Natural, a bodyweight movement system.

The school opens early on weekdays. There are 6 am starts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 am starts on the other weekdays, and classes run into the evening. Saturday is a late-morning session.

Visiting and first class

  • Trial and drop-ins: we could not find a published trial or drop-in policy, so contact the school before your first visit. Gracie Barra says members can train at any official school.
  • Other Gracie Barra schools in the city: Toronto East, on Railside Road, has its own Gracie Barra page.

Details above were checked on Gracie Barra's school pages in October 2026. Confirm the current schedule with the school before you go.
