Kyra Gracie is a Brazilian black belt from Rio de Janeiro and the first woman of the Gracie family to compete actively at the top level. She won the IBJJF Worlds in 2006, 2008 and 2010, including the 2008 absolute, and ADCC gold at −60 kg in 2005, 2007 and 2011. In 2021 she became the first woman inducted into the ADCC Hall of Fame.

Background and lineage

Kyra Gracie Guimarães is a granddaughter of Robson Gracie, the second son of Carlos Gracie Sr. Her mother is Flavia Gracie, and her uncles include Renzo, Ralph and Ryan Gracie. She won Brazilian National titles every year from 1998 to 2001 as a coloured belt and trained at Gracie Barra in Rio, the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York and Gracie Barra in Lake Forest, California. BJJ Heroes credits Carlos Gracie Jr. with promoting her to black belt at 21. She now holds a fourth-degree black belt and a judo black belt.

Style and signature techniques

BJJ Heroes lists closed guard as her favourite position. Neither source breaks down her submissions, so we do not name signature finishes. Outside jiu-jitsu she holds a judo black belt and has trained wrestling and, from 2010, boxing.

Teaching, family and media

In 2010 Kyra joined the Gracie Elite Team, which links the academies of Rilion, Renzo, Ralph and Cesar Gracie, and co-founded the Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Adventure Camp with relatives. She competed on the Japanese obstacle course show Kunoichi. She has two daughters with Brazilian actor Malvino Salvador. In 2023 she promoted her cousin Rayron Gracie to black belt, the first time a Gracie woman had promoted a family member.
