Brown Belt Roadmap

Refine pressure, counters, and high-percentage finishes while closing the holes in your existing game.

What brown belt means

Brown belt is the last step before black. It means you have a complete game and are refining it: heavier pins, better counters and finishes you can hit on anyone your size. Brown belts usually help run classes.

How long brown belt takes

IBJJF minimum: Age 18 and at least 18 months at purple belt. You must then hold brown for at least 1 year before black.

Typical: Around 6 to 9 years from your first class to brown, then about 1 to 2 years at brown.

What you're usually tested on

  • Pins that flow: twister side control, knee on belly transitions and north-south pressure.
  • Counter-wrestling: front headlock chains, whizzer to takedown and snap down to back.
  • High-percentage finishes: the paper cutter choke, baseball bat choke and technical mount armbar.
  • Closing holes: the granby from turtle, gift wrap to back and crucifix entries.

Learning Objectives

  • Make pins heavy and sequential so opponents cannot rest under side control.
  • Counter common wrestling entries instead of pulling guard out of panic.
  • Finish from mount, back, and front headlock with a small, reliable set of attacks.
  • Close the defensive holes that show up on film rather than adding a new guard.

How to use this roadmap

  • Work through one block at a time. Drill each technique, then test it in positional sparring before moving on.
  • Bring the list to class and ask your coach which details matter most in your gym.
  • Promotions are your coach's call. This is a study plan, not a promotion checklist.

      positionsAdvanced

      transitionsAdvanced
  3. Block 03

      submissionsAdvanced

      submissionsAdvanced

    Weeks 13-16: Closing Holes

Treat turtle, gift wrap, and crucifix as the places your film review keeps showing.

When flattened in turtle, granby toward the choking arm and recover a guard or sit-up.

      transitionsAdvanced
