Waiter's Sweep
Deep-half sweep that elevates the passer like a waiter’s tray and rolls them over the trapped side to come up on top.
From Deep Half GuardTo Top / Side Control
Overview
The waiter’s sweep elevates the opponent from deep half guard so their weight rests on your shoulder/hip “tray,” then rolls them over the trapped-leg side to reverse to top. It is one of the highest-percentage payoffs of a clean deep-half entry.
#Own Deep Half
Get under the hip before elevating.
- Clear cross-face pressure
- Slide head and shoulder under the hip line
- Clamp the trapped leg
- Control the far arm or belt
#Elevate and Roll
- Lift them onto the waiter tray angle
- Load weight over the trapped side
- Roll through as they post
- Keep the leg clamp until you start coming up
#Consolidate Top
Arrive in a pin or single-leg, not a scramble.
- Come up to side control or a strong single-leg
- Address immediate frames
- Settle chest pressure
- Only then hunt submissions
Key Grips & Control Points
- Head and shoulder under their hip line
- Clamp on the trapped leg so the knee cannot extract
- Far-arm or belt control to stop them posting out of the roll
- Elevation angle that loads them onto the trapped side
Timing & Movement Cues
- Elevate when their weight is already on the trapped hip
- Roll as they post the far hand to kill the lift
- Follow to top before they recover a knee shield
Pressure & Weight Distribution
- Lift with structure under the hip, not with arm strength alone
- Keep the trapped leg pinched through the roll
- Come up chest-to-chest or into a clean single-leg finish
Typical Counters to Expect
- Heavy sprawl that kills elevation before the tray forms
- Extracting the trapped knee mid-lift
- Posting wide and stepping over your head
Follow-Up Options
- Side control after a clean roll-through
- Single-leg finish if they stand during the elevation
- Back take if they turn away while reversing
Setups & Entries
- Dive to deep half from regular half when the underhook appears
- Butterfly to deep half when one leg is captured
- Force a post with a fake single-leg, then elevate
Training Drills
- Deep-half elevation reps to a controlled top position
- Waiter roll-throughs with progressive posting resistance
- Entry-to-sweep chains from half guard
Coaching Notes
- Under the hip is non-negotiable — beside the hip is not waiter
- Pinch the trapped leg or the sweep leaks
- Finish on top; stopping mid-roll gifts the smash pass

Summary
Waiter’s sweep is deep-half elevation plus a roll over the trapped side. Get under the hip, pinch the leg, lift, roll, and settle top before they smash you flat again.
