Side Control
Fundamental top control position with strong pins and transitions.
Overview
Side control is a fundamental top position where the top player controls the opponent from the side, limiting movement and setting up transitions and submissions.
Position Flow
How to Enter
- Complete a guard pass and settle chest-to-chest with cross-face and hip control
- Spin from knee-on-belly when the opponent turns toward you
- Drop from north-south or mount to reset control when the opponent bridges
- Reverse underhook recovery from half guard to re-establish top pressure
How to Exit
- Slide knee across to mount when frames collapse
- Pop up to knee-on-belly to chase transitions or reset grips
- Spin to north-south for chokes or arm attacks
- Take the back when the opponent turns away defending the cross-face
Key Controls
- Cross-face combined with far-side underhook
- Hip-blocking knee and elbow wedges to trap the near-side arm
- Low hips and head pressure to blunt shrimp attempts
- Use of hip switches (reverse kesa, traditional) to follow movement
Vulnerabilities
- Shrimp-to-guard recoveries if hips float high
- Bridge-and-roll reactions when weight leans too far head-side
- Underhook recoveries if the far arm is left uncontrolled
- Leg entanglements if knees drift across the opponent’s body
Ideal When
You want to stabilize after a pass, wear down defenses, and create openings for mount, north-south, or submissions.
OffenseOffense
Goals
- Maintain chest and hip connection while isolating arms
- Progress toward dominant finishes or transitions without sacrificing control
Key Techniques
- Americana/Kimura chain
- Arm-triangle and north-south choke setups
- Mounted crucifix or spinning armbar transitions
Pro Tips
- Switch hip orientation (standard to reverse kesa) to follow movement
- Use your knees to trap the near-side arm before sitting for submissions
Common Mistakes
- Hovering hips and allowing shrimp space
- Reaching over the head, giving up the underhook battle
DefenseDefense
Goals
- Create frames against the neck and hip to recover guard
- Deny cross-face pressure before attempting escapes
Key Techniques
- Frame-shrimp recoveries back to half or full guard
- Bridge to insert knee shield then hip escape to guard
Pro Tips
- Frame early with forearms to prevent the cross-face from settling
- Combine bridges and hip escapes rather than using them in isolation
Common Mistakes
- Trying to bench press the top player straight up
- Rolling away without establishing an underhook first

Key Concepts
- Win the underhook/cross-face battle before hunting submissions
- Float your hips to follow bridges without losing chest pressure
- Trap limbs with knees and elbows to remove defensive frames
Recommended Drills
- Side-control retention rounds with partner attempting shrimps
- Transition drills between side control, north-south, and mount
- Submission chains linking Americana, arm triangle, and north-south choke

Summary
Side control rewards relentless pressure: secure cross-face and hip wedges, isolate frames, and flow into higher-value positions or submissions as defenses crack.
