Gilbert "Durinho" Burns is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and former UFC welterweight title challenger with one of the largest grappling-adjacent followings on Instagram. His feed covers MMA and jiu-jitsu training.

Jiu-jitsu career

Burns was born on 20 July 1986 in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, and started formal training at Associação Oriente in Niterói. Wikipedia traces his lineage through Rafael Barros, André Pederneiras and Carlson Gracie. He holds a third-degree black belt. His gi and no-gi results include:

  • IBJJF World Championship: silver in 2009 and black belt gold at −76 kg in 2011
  • IBJJF World No-Gi: champion in 2010 and 2013
  • Other titles: 2010 Brazilian Nationals and 2010 Abu Dhabi World Pro
  • ADCC: bronze in 2015

MMA career

Burns trained at Xtreme Couture and the Blackzilians before settling with Kill Cliff FC in 2017. He debuted in the UFC on 26 July 2014 with a decision win over Andreas Ståhl. In 2020 he stopped fellow jiu-jitsu world champion Demian Maia in the first round and then beat former champion Tyron Woodley by decision. That run earned him a welterweight title shot against Kamaru Usman at UFC 258 in February 2021, which he lost by third-round TKO. His April 2022 decision loss to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273 won Fight of the Night.

After a third-round TKO loss to Mike Malott on 18 April 2026, he laid down his gloves, signalling his retirement from MMA. He has kept competing in grappling: on 4 June 2026 he submitted Horlando Monteiro with a rear-naked choke at UFC BJJ 9, and on 18 September 2026 he lost to Khamzat Chimaev by technical fall in the second round at RAF 13. Wikipedia's table lists his record as 22 wins and 10 losses. His younger brother, Herbert Burns, also fought in the UFC.
