What is the Bulldog Choke?
The bulldog choke attacks the neck from beside or slightly in front of a turtled opponent. You cup the head, slide a forearm under the chin or against the carotid line, and clamp with the biceps/shoulder while controlling their posture so they cannot turn into you or stand up.
Setup
- Secure side control of turtle or a collapsed front headlock.
- Cup the crown of the head and find the neck line under the chin or along the carotids.
- Pin their near shoulder/hip so they cannot circle out.
Execution
- Slide the choking forearm into place while the free hand reinforces the clamp.
- Drive shoulder pressure and squeeze the biceps toward the forearm.
- Keep your hips heavy so they cannot roll or sit out cleanly.
Finishing
- Tighten gradually as their chin peels or the carotids compress.
- If the finish stalls, transition to guillotine, clock choke (gi), or back takes.
- Release on tap — short chokes can finish quickly once sealed.

Bulldog chokes compress the neck at close range. Apply slow pressure in training and avoid cranking the spine when the chin is trapped.
