Granby Roll
Shoulder roll that clears pressure and recovers guard or reverses bad angles — a core retention and turtle escape tool.

Overview
The granby roll is a shoulder-over-shoulder roll used to escape turtle, clear side pressure, and recompose open guard. You post a hand or frame, roll across the shoulder line, and land with hooks or frames ready so the opponent cannot settle on your back or side.
#Create the Lane
You need space and a clear shoulder path.
- Frame or post to start the roll direction
- Tuck the chin and choose the near shoulder
- Feel whether they are heavy enough to block mid-roll
- Commit when the lane is open
#Roll Through
- Drive over the shoulder line
- Keep hips following the rotation
- Protect the neck throughout
- Do not stall under their chest
#Recompose Guard
The escape ends in structure.
- Land on your back or hip with frames ready
- Insert open-guard hooks or De La Riva
- Clear immediate follow pressure
- Reset breathing before the next exchange
Key Grips & Control Points
- Posting hand or frame that starts the roll direction
- Chin tucked and near shoulder accepting the roll path
- Free hand ready to insert a hook or De La Riva as you land
- Hip connection that completes the rotation instead of stalling on the shoulder
Timing & Movement Cues
- Roll as they ride high on turtle or commit to a seatbelt
- Initiate when side pressure overcommits past your shoulder line
- Finish the roll before they insert both hooks
Pressure & Weight Distribution
- Roll through — do not pause on the shoulder under their weight
- Keep the neck safe by tucking chin and choosing a clear roll path
- Land with frames so they cannot follow into mount or back
Typical Counters to Expect
- Heavy hips that pin the near shoulder before you roll
- Seatbelt and hook inserts that catch mid-roll
- Following the roll into north-south or mount
Follow-Up Options
- Open guard or De La Riva on the landing
- Reverse De La Riva / berimbolo paths if they stay standing
- Single-leg or sit-up attacks if they overpursue
Setups & Entries
- Turtle when a pass is nearly complete but hooks are not in
- Side-control escapes that need a dynamic reset
- Guard retention when a knee-cut or smash folds you toward turtle
Training Drills
- Solo granby shoulder-roll warmups
- Turtle to granby to open-guard landings
- Retention granbys vs progressive top pressure
Coaching Notes
- Commit through the shoulder — hesitant rolls get caught
- Land with a plan: hook, frame, or elevate
- If the roll is blocked, switch to a static frame escape

Summary
Granby roll escapes turtle and side pressure by rolling through the shoulder into recomposed open guard. Create a lane, commit through the rotation, and land with hooks or frames — abandon into static escapes if they pin the shoulder early.
