Paul Schreiner is an American jiu-jitsu black belt and coach best known for his years as an instructor at the Marcelo Garcia Academy in New York. He also co-founded Kaijin Academy in his home town of Santa Cruz, California. His Instagram focuses on teaching and technical detail.

Background

Schreiner was born on 15 December 1977 and grew up in Santa Cruz. He surfed as a child, wrestled briefly in high school, and finished school in New Zealand, where he played rugby. Knee injuries shaped his early years, including torn ACLs and a serious staph infection. He started jiu-jitsu in 1996 at Claudio França's academy, where most of the coaching came from Garth Taylor. He came back to the mats around 2000 after watching Taylor train with BJ Penn.

França and Taylor awarded all his belts, including his black belt in December 2007. His lineage runs from França through Francisco Mansor to Hélio Gracie.

Marcelo Garcia Academy

Schreiner met Marcelo Garcia in 2004 and began training with him in New York in 2007. He became an assistant instructor at the Marcelo Garcia Academy in 2010. BJJ Heroes credits him with helping develop several high-level athletes there. He has also trained with Dave Camarillo.

Competition

  • IBJJF World Championship (2006): bronze at brown belt.
  • IBJJF World Masters (2012): silver at Master 1, middleweight.

Teaching style

BJJ Heroes lists his favourite technique simply as "well rounded". The academy where he coached is built around Marcelo Garcia's game; see Garcia's profile and our pages on the butterfly guard, x-guard, arm drags and guillotines. BJJ Heroes' profile also includes an armbar tutorial from him.
