Straight Ankle Lock

Primary straight foot lock attacking the ankle — legal at all adult belts in IBJJF and essential in no-gi leg entanglements.

joint lock
Overview

The straight ankle lock attacks the ankle by controlling the foot and rotating your hips while your forearm cuts into the Achilles tendon. It is the gateway leg lock for beginners and remains high-percentage at elite no-gi levels from ashi garami and fifty-fifty.

#Setup
  1. Control the foot at the toes or ball — never the heel alone.
  2. Place your forearm blade across the Achilles with the foot on your chest or hip.
  3. Pinch knees on the leg and fall to your side for hip alignment.
#Execution
  1. Arch hips forward while pulling the toes toward your chest.
  2. Keep the knee line controlled — rotation at the knee reduces breaking pressure.
  3. Apply pressure slowly; ankle locks tap fast when the line is correct.
#Finishing
  1. Fall to the outside hip on the controlled leg.
  2. Reap rules vary by federation — know your competition ruleset.
