What is the Heel Hook?
The heel hook finishes by controlling the heel and rotating the foot to load the knee ligaments. Inside and outside variations change the direction of torque, but both reward knee-line control, hip connection, and calm pressure more than explosive twisting.
Setup
- Establish a stable entanglement (ashi, single-leg X, or fifty-fifty) with the knee line pinned.
- Cup the heel so the calcaneus cannot slip; keep the toes pointed away from your finishing arc.
- Clamp your knees and hide your own exposed leg before hunting the finish.
Execution
- Fall to the finishing hip while keeping chest and hips connected to the trapped leg.
- Rotate through the heel with your whole body, not just the arms.
- Maintain secondary-leg control so the opponent cannot turn out or stack you.
Finishing
- Increase rotation gradually until the tap; never snap through resistance.
- If the heel slips, re-secure foot control before reloading torque.
- Release immediately on tap — knee injuries often appear after the pain signal.
