What is the Twister?
The twister is a spinal lock typically finished from the truck. By trapping one leg, controlling the upper body, and rotating the torso against a fixed lower body, the attacker loads the spine and neck. Under IBJJF rules the twister is illegal as a spinal lock. This page exists so athletes understand the mechanics, the rule status, and safer training alternatives — not to encourage illegal application in IBJJF competition.
Setup
- Enter the truck with one of their legs trapped and your hips controlling the lower body.
- Secure upper-body control (often a face cradle or similar clasp) on the far side.
- Keep their trapped leg immobilized so the lower body cannot follow the rotation.
Execution
- Rotate the upper body against the fixed lower body with gradual, whole-body pressure.
- Maintain truck control so they cannot turn out of the entanglement.
- Stop immediately on any tap, verbal signal, or sign of distress.
Finishing
- In allowed rulesets, increase rotation only after control is solid — never snap.
- If the upper-body clasp slips, abandon the spinal finish rather than yanking the neck.
- Prefer positional exits (back take, calf slicer where legal) when rules forbid the twister.
