Eddie Bravo opened the first 10th Planet school in Los Angeles in 2003, soon after his run at the ADCC World Championship that year. A black belt under Jean-Jacques Machado, he built a jiu-jitsu system for training without the gi, and the network has since grown to over 100 schools.
The 10th Planet system
10th Planet is a no-gi system. Instead of grips on the collar and sleeves, the game relies on positions that work without cloth: the rubber guard, the lockdown half guard and the twister, a spinal lock Bravo popularized. Students keep the standard ranks from white to black belt but show them with colored rash guards.
Bravo also founded the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI), a submission-only event, and Combat Jiu-Jitsu, which allows open-hand strikes on the ground.
What to bring
Wear a rash guard and shorts or spats. Most 10th Planet schools have no dress code beyond that, but check with the gym before your first class.
