Guards Techniques
Master the fundamental guard positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Guard is the bottom player's control system. It lets you manage distance, protect yourself, off-balance the top player, and create attacks without needing to be on top first.
Start with guard retention and posture control before hunting submissions. If your frames, grips, hooks, and hip movement are weak, attacks become easy to shut down.
Progression order for beginners
- Closed Guard — posture breaks, sweeps, and chained submissions
- Half Guard — retention against smash passes, then recovery
- Open Guard — distance management and modular hooks
- Butterfly Guard — elevation and seated attacks
Strong guard work depends on:
- Keeping active hips instead of lying flat.
- Using grips and hooks to control distance.
- Creating angles before attacking.
- Switching guards when the top player changes pressure.
